2010 RAD Studio Cruise on February 13

Posted By admin on February 8, 2010

I’m definitely going to try & make it out for this: image On February 13 from 2:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m., the RAD Studio Cruise will take place. The free annual event features art exhibits & sales at various galleries, live demonstrations, performances, refreshments & more. I’m looking forward to the potter demonstrations at MudFire Clayworks, the blown glass & the handmade jewelry, but the live music, magicians & theater should be fun, too.

If I’m going to be sans kids, I’ll RSVP & spring for the Duckbill Studios workshop & try and make my own glass heart. I hope this doesn’t require too much coordination, as I’m lacking lately…

Click here for a map of studios on the RAD (Rail Arts District) Studio Cruise.

Ticket Discount for Diana: A Celebration at the Atlanta Civic Center

Posted By admin on February 8, 2010

It took a while, but the Atlanta Civic Center has finally made a discount ticket offer available for Diana: A Celebration. image I’m definitely taking the girls to see this one. They’re 5 & 8 and still love princesses; I can’t pass up the opportunity to let them see a real princess’ belongings up close.

First, the exhibition: For those of you who aren’t familiar with it, Diana: A Celebration showcases the life & works of Diana, Princess of Wales. There’s a tiara gallery, her wedding gown, evening gowns, and family heirlooms, to name a few of the 150 items on display, and the exhibition covers her humanitarian works, too.

The details: Diana: A Celebration will be at the Atlanta Civic Center through June 13, 2010. Tickets are $18.50 for adults, $12 for children ages 6-12, and $15.50 for seniors age 65+, students with ID & groups of 10+. Kids age 5 & under are free.

The discounts:

1) You can print this coupon to save $7 when you buy a pair of adult tickets at the box office. Prefer to buy tickets online? Select two adult tickets & use promo code “LOVE” to save $7. FYI-the online code won’t be active until Tues. or Wed., as it takes a couple of days for Ticketmaster to update the system. The offer expires on February 28, 2010.

2) You can buy a combo ticket to Diana & the Georgia Aquarium. BUT this is not a good deal at the moment. The combo tickets are $39.99 for adults, $29.00 for kids ages 6-17, and $19.50 for kids ages 3-5. Through February 28, you’ll save more if you purchase your tickets separately. The Georgia Aquarium has a $20 ticket social media discount & a $25 Me & Mommy discount (covers 1 adult, 4 kids age 5 & under, & parking). Bonus: Though you have to buy them by the end of the month, you don’t have to use your Georgia Aquarium tickets by Feb. 28. Even at Diana’s regular prices, you’ll come out ahead. But you’ll save a small fortune if you have one or more kids age 5 or under since they’re free at Diana & essentially free with the Me & Mommy deal at the aquarium.

3) If you’re looking for a hotel package, you’ll find several here. YMMV (your mileage may vary) as to whether these are good deals. If you have hotel rewards, work the numbers to see if you’ll get a better deal by booking your room & then buying tickets a la carte.

The Atlanta Civic Center is located at 395 Piedmont Ave., Atlanta.

Reminder: Ticket Discounts to Atlanta Ballet’s Cinderella

Posted By admin on February 8, 2010

The girls & I went to see the Atlanta Ballet’s “Cinderella” this weekend. image_thumb2We bought our tickets to last summer during a 50% off sale, and we got very lucky—A) We had good seats (right orchestra, near the aisle). And B) I failed to check the calendar for potential conflicts, like the Super Bowl, but we were home in plenty of time for kickoff after the 2:00 p.m. matinee, so it worked out.

A brief review: “Cinderella” was our first non-Nutcracker trip to the ballet, so I have little to compare it to. But I can tell you that it was a fun production. My girls, especially my five year old, sat on the edge of their seats the entire time, and that wasn’t just so that they could see better. They’re still at an age where they’re fascinated by princesses, and they were mesmerized by both Cinderella and the fairy godmother. It’s not the Disney version on stage; per my daughters, Cinderella’s dress is the “wrong” color (it should be blue, not pink), and they thought it was odd that Cinderella’s father was still alive, too. But now I have an excuse to dig out the original fairy tale & read it to them so that we can figure out which version is closest to accurate.

Highlights: The stepsisters were hilarious, as was the jester. It took my girls a bit to pick up on the fact that the stepsisters were actually boys dressed up as girls, but once they realized that, they thought they were even funnier. And I thought the set was very well done, especially the mirrored windows during the ball scenes. I was surprised by how much detail went into the production; I’d always assumed that the ballet’s sets would be fairly sparse.

Disappointments (Neither of these have anything to do with the production itself): 1) The Cobb Energy Centre ran out of booster seats (get there at least 10 minutes early if your kids need one). 2) The noise level in the audience was beyond ridiculous. Most of the chatter came from the center of the house, which surprised me, as those are the most expensive seats and I’d assume that those families can afford to attend live productions more frequently & their kids have enough experience to know how to behave. The Atlanta Ballet built in two intermissions, so the kids had frequent breaks to stretch, chat & burn off a little bit of energy, but it was clear that quite a few parents had zero interest in quieting their children during the performance, or showing any respect themselves, for that matter. There was a near-constant sound of unwrapping food items, even though the sign prohibited food in the theatre for this production. I hope Cobb Energy trains its ushers to usher people out. It’s was very disrespectful.

Want to go? You can still save on tickets to upcoming performances with these deals:

1) You can buy a family four pack of tickets for $200, a savings of $148 (at that price point, those are good seats). Additional tickets are $50 each, but you must buy a minimum of four.

2) Don’t need four? Or want to pay less per ticket? Use promo code “SLIPPER” to save 20%. There’s a limit of four tickets per household.

3) If you go to see Diana: A Celebration, you can bring your ticket stub to save 50% on tickets through February 14. Save even more by taking advantage of a ticket discount for Diana, too.

Cinderella will be at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre from February 4-14, 2010. 2800 Cobb Galleria Parkway, Atlanta.

I haven’t been to Taqueria El Vecino yet, but with a lunch special like this one, I may need to check it out next time I’m in Decatur at that hour:image

From 11:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. on Monday-Friday, you can buy $5 lunch plates & $1.50 tacos. That’s a good deal, but what really won me over is that your drink (tea or lemonade) is free.

By the way, you can follow them on Twitter at @taqueriavecino. Angela keeps the Twitter feed up to date, and she’s full of tons of great info that’s totally non-taco related, like tipping me off to Lexie Barnes’ laptop bags. I’ll be posting a deal about those, too, as soon as I find a promo code.
