Atlanta’s movie theaters were allowed to re-open on Monday, April 27th. But that didn’t happen, for a variety of reasons.
Most theaters in our area are owned by major chains — AMC, Regal, and Cinemark are the three largest. Variety reports that none of these plan to open before June or even July.
We’ll keep you updated on the movie theater situation.
In the meanwhile, you might consider an old-fashioned drive-in movie experience.

Atlanta’s Plaza Theatre opens two pop-up drive-in movie locations
Atlanta’s Plaza Theatre has has opened a pop-up drive-in theater in the back parking lot — and is operating another pop-up experience at Dad’s Garage, in the Old 4th Ward.
You may remember that this independent, locally owned theater had a $2.5 million renovation back in 2017. In recent weeks, a GoFundMe campaign raised over $14,000 to help it stay afloat.
Here’s what you need to know about the new drive-ins:
♣ The Plaza tested the pop-up drive-in model already and determined the idea could work, using a 24-foot inflatable screen and an FM transmitter for audio.
♣ The Plaza’s midtown location accommodates about 43 cars in its back parking lot, while the Dad’s Garage location holds 53 cars.
♠ Tickets sell out fast and well in advance!
♣ According to Eater Atlanta, local restaurants are delivering food to the movie locations.
♣ Tickets are $15 for one person in a vehicle, and the price is discounted after that — it maxes out at $50 for five people.
♣ You can have fresh popcorn delivered right to your car!
♣ You must remain in your car — no lawn chairs or picnic blankets allowed.
♣ To enter the building for a restroom, you’ll need to put on a mask. It’s suggested that you use the restroom just before coming to the show.
♣ You need an FM radio in your car to get the audio.
♣ SUVs and tall vehicles will be parked toward the back.
♣ Movies are canceled during very bad weather.
♣ You can read a full description here of what to expect and which safety measures are required of you.
