The lantern parade
Anyone can participate in the parade. The theme is black-and-white, so dress accordingly and bring a lantern. You can also make an owl mask from a free pattern if you’d like — details below.
Participants will begin gathering at 8 pm. The parade will start at The Plaza at Colony Square at 9 p.m. on Saturday, August 14th. It will follow a path down Crescent Avenue and make a one-mile loop before returning to The Plaza. You can view the route here.
The Black Sheep Ensemble will play live tunes in The Plaza until 10 p.m. and you’re invited to linger after the parade. Food and drink will be available from the restaurants in the Politan Row food court.
NOTE: You can see from the photos that you don’t need an elaborate owl lantern to participate. You can start with a simple round paper lantern and glue on big owl eyes that you create from craft paper. Get some ideas from this Pinterest board or from Google Images.
The lantern-making kits
Ahead of the event, you can come to Colony Square to create your own owl lantern in a DIY workshop.
Community workshops will take place on Wednesday, August 11th and Friday, August 13th from 6 to 8 p.m. Just come to The Patio at Colony Square, the outdoor seating area connected to the new Politan Row food hall.
Come early and get a FREE owl mask printout.
You can buy a lantern kit on site at the workshop for $15 or $25. It includes all craft materials, including scissors, glue, and instructions.
Can’t come to a workshop?
You can purchase the kit at Shep’s Midtown Ace Hardware (located at 860 Juniper St NE, Atlanta GA 30308) from August 7th thru 14th.
