[exp] [/exp]For at least a few hours this Labor Day weekend, you’ll find us at Art in the Park, which takes place on Marietta’s historic Square. Not familiar with it? It’s a juried fine arts show, and it features works by 150 artists of all sorts—photographers, potters, sculptors, jewelers, painters, and the list goes on.
We’ll likely be there the morning of September 1; I like to combine my trip with a visit to the Marietta Farmer’s Market, which is open from 9:00 a.m.-noon on Saturdays.
We love to browse, but my kids especially enjoy the Interactive Art Alley, which is home to free make-and-take art stations for people of all ages. This year’s featured activity is the Marietta Cityscape Project–you can design your own piece of the town using boxes, paper towel rows, paper bags, paints construction paper and other recyclable materials. And kids can create puppets, noise shakers, sand art, mosaic art, and more. Plus, you can register to compete in the Chalk-It-Up! Sidewalk Chalk Art competition.
A couple of other interesting extras this weekend:
- Art in the Park will feature two professional 3-D artists, Lori Escalera and Julie Kirk. They’ll be working on their designs from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. on Saturday & Sunday.
- ArtcarPalooza–a celebration of rolling works of art–will take place on Atlanta Street on Saturday & Sunday. You can see Artcar, Contraption, Motorized & Youth (think bikes, wagons, & strollers) vehicles from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. on Saturday as well as Classic, Customized, Hot Rod, and Low-Rider vehicles from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. on Sunday.
- The Marietta Cobb Museum of Art is offering $2 off admission on Saturday, Sunday, & Monday.
Art in the Park takes place from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 1, through Monday, September 3. Parking is free on the streets in the square, in the lot at the corner of Mill St & N. Marietta Parkway, and in the two Cobb County parking decks off Waddell and Haynes St.
