Mamma Mia! will be at The Fox Theatre in Atlanta from September 23-28, 2014. I’ve seen it before, and I plan to go again. You can sum up Mamma Mia! in one word: Hilarious. But here’s what I really want to know: When did I get old enough to start identifying with the mom & her friends?
The basics: If you’ve seen the movie, you know the plot: 20-year-old Sophie is getting married on a Greek island. She doesn’t know who her father is, and when she comes across her mother’s diary & discovers that there are three possibilities, she sends them all invitations to the wedding. As she’s naive, she thought she’d “know” her dad on sight. She doesn’t, and hilarity ensues, all to the beat of ABBA’s hit songs, including “Dancing Queen,” “S.O.S.,” “The Winner Takes It All,” “Take a Chance on Me”, & “Mamma Mia.”
The fair warning (mainly for the parents considering bringing their kids): Assuming it’s the same as other productions, there are scenes with drinking, drug references (Sophie’s mom, Donna, was & is a very free spirit), and even a lap dance or two.
