From June 4-8, 2014, head to the Upper Green at Piedmont Park for Shakespeare in the Park: As You Like It. I saw A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Shake at the Lake a couple of years ago, and it was such fun. There’s something about seeing Shakespeare’s works performed live & outdoors—it has the feeling of “this is how the plays are meant to be seen”–and the set had a “found objects” feel, with everything from coat racks to rolling tables serving as props. I can’t wait to see how they play around with As You Like It.
If you’re not familiar with the work, here’s the summary: “Shakespeare in the Park kicks off the summer with a night of merriment, including one of the Bard’s most popular plays, As You Like It, and a live bluegrass band that sets Shakespeare’s words to foot-tappin’ music. ‘Love is merely a madness’ in this romantic comedy featuring thwarted lovers, a clown, and women disguised as men. The duke’s daughter and her cousin flee a dangerous situation at the royal court and end up in the mysterious Forest of Arden. There they encounter comical twists and turns on their merry romp toward an eventual happy ending, where true love wins out. Through mischievous misunderstandings, pleasing poetry and hilarious happenstance, As You Like It shows that the forces of romance and justice can make an out-of-kilter world right again.”
