The Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History is home to The General, a Confederate locomotive stolen by Union spies while its passengers & crew were eating breakfast at the Lacy Hotel in Big Shanty, giving you a close-up look at a key piece of the Great Locomotive Chase, as well as other train-themed exhibitions, from Railroads: Lifelines of the Civil War to Glover Machine Works: Casting a New South.

Want to check it out on the cheap? Through January 1, 2013, $8 buys day passes for two adults or $9 buys day passes for two adults & up to four children at The Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History, thanks to a deal on Living Social. The vouchers must be used by May 2, 2013, and they’re not valid for admission to special events.

Speaking of special events, Trains, Trains, Trains! will take place at the Southern Museum on Saturday, January 19, 2013. From 9:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m., there’ll be a model train expo, crafts, tips and techniques for building a home layout, a train-themed story time, railroad music and vendors selling a variety of train-related items.

Though you can’t use the voucher for Trains, Trains, Trains!, it’s still a relatively inexpensive outing. Admission is $7.50 for adults, $6.50 for seniors, $5.50 for children ages 4-12, and free for children age three and under.
