The Great Locomotive Chase took place about 150 years ago. On April 12, 1862, union spies stole The General, a Confederate locomotive, while its passengers & crew were eating breakfast at the Lacy Hotel in Big Shanty. Confederate troops gave chase, capturing the spies just before they reached Chattanooga. The Union spies were hung at the time, but they were later among the first to receive the medal of honor (many posthumously).

The Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History is home to The General, and you can check out the locomotive itself free of charge + learn more details about the Great Locomotive Chase when the museum wraps up its sesquicentennial celebration this weekend.

From 9:30 a.m.-7:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2012, admission is free to The Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History.
