The Great Locomotive Chase took place 150 years ago. On April 12, 1862, union spies stole The General, a Confederate locomotive, while its passengers & crew were eating breakfast at the Lacy Hotel in Big Shanty. Confederate troops gave chase, capturing the spies just before they reached Chattanooga. The Union spies were hung at the time, but they were later among the first to receive the medal of honor (many posthumously).

The Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History is home to The General, and you can check out the locomotive itself free of charge + learn more details about the Great Locomotive Chase during the sesquicentennial celebration.

From 9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, 2012, admission is free to The Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History.

And on April 14 & 15, 2012, The Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History will host “Camp McDonald: A Living History Weekend. The living history aspect will take place on the lawn across the street from the museum, and it will recreate a Confederate encampment located in the area during the Civil War. Admission is $5 for adults & $2 for children ages 4-12, and it includes entry to the museum & the encampment. FYI–museum admission is regularly $7.50 for adults & $5.50 for children, so it’s a good way to check it out on the cheap if you can’t make it out for the free admission day.

Camp McDonald will be open from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. on April 14 & 15. The museum will be open regular hours: 9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. on April 14 & 11:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. on April 15.
