Through February 26, 2012, Ruth and the Green Book will be at the Center for Puppetry Arts. I haven’t seen it yet, but based on the rave reviews from some of my mom friends, I’m going to try & make it out to this one.

Here’s the summary: “Chronicling a relatively-unknown chapter in Civil Rights history, Ruth and the Green Book follows an African-American family as they travel from Chicago to Alabama in the Jim Crow South of the 1950s. After being turned away from hotels, gas stations and restaurants, 8-year-old Ruth and her parents are introduced to “The Green Book,” a travel guide for black motorists conceived as a response to the humiliation and violence experienced by African Americans while traveling. Using an innovative combination of puppetry and animated projections that are inspired by the book’s evocative illustrations, this collaboration between Artistic Director Jon Ludwig and author Calvin Alexander Ramsey celebrates this great guidebook that helped Ruth’s family, like many others, find safe routes to welcoming places and people. As part of the Teen & Adult performance series, Ruth and the Green Book is recommended for ages nine and up.”

Planning to go? You can save a bit on tickets (includes show, museum admission + create-a-puppet workshop):

In addition to the Center for Puppetry Arts’ permanent collection, “Puppets: The Power of Wonder,” the largest collection of global puppetry in the nation, the museum features three special exhibits featuring the art of Jim Henson: “Jim Henson:  Wonders From His Workshop,” “Jim Henson:  A Man and His Frog,” and “Jim Henson: Puppeteer,” as well as “Passports: New Arrivals from the World of Puppetry”

A word of warning: Once your kids see the many options for creating puppets, they may attempt to repurpose every item in your home to make it part of their latest production. Which is fabulous until you actually need to use something they’ve wandered off with….

And a pair of free admission reminders:

  • You’ll need to live, work, or attend school in Fulton County to take advantage of this first deal: On the first Saturday of the month, residents of Fulton County, students, & Fulton County Government can get free admission to the Center for Puppetry Arts’ museum. The freebie does not include a show ticket, but you can save 25% at the door if you decide to see the performance & participate in the Create-A-Puppet workshop. You’ll need to download & print this form plus show proof of residency (GA Driver’s License or ID card), a student ID, or a Fulton County employee ID card to get in free. The free admission days take place on the first Saturday of the month; the next free day will be on March 5, 2012.
  • Not a Fulton County resident? No worries: From 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. on Thursdays, it’s free to tour the museum.
