Free Admission to “Jim Crow and the Rhythm Darlings” on December 16

Posted By admin on December 15, 2009

2009 Essential Theatre Playwriting Award Winner “Jim Crow and the Rhythm Darlings” by Vynnie Meli will return to the stage for one night: December 16 at 7:00 p.m.

Not familiar with the work? It sounds like an interesting story: The play takes place during World World II, and it focuses on an all-female African-American jazz group, The International Rhythm Darlings. Since so many men are off to war, the women are finally able to get some stage time while touring the deep South…that is, until they add a white Jewish woman to the mix as a last-minute replacement. Now that they’re an integrated group, they’re back to square one. There’s no place for integrated groups to play jazz, especially in the South (view the trailer).

Admission is free, and the performance will take place at New Mercies Christian Church, 4000 Five Forks Trickum Rd., Lilburn.
