5 Free Ways to Ring in the New Year in Atlanta
Posted on | December 28, 2008 |
Looking for a fun & free way to ring in the New Year? Check out these five events:
- On Wednesday, December 31, head downtown for the Chick-fil-A Bowl Parade. Serving as the official kick-off for the big game, everything from floats and mascots to cheerleaders and dance groups will get you in a festive mood. The parade kicks off at 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Peachtree Street and Ralph McGill Boulevard winds down to the Georgia World Congress Center, leading fans to the FanFest inside. The parade is free, but going to the Chick-fil-A Bowl FanFest at the Georgia World Congress Center will cost you. Tickets are $15 each to attend the giant indoor pep rally, which runs from 2:00 p.m. -6:00 p.m.
- Bring the kids to Noon Year’s Eve in Smyrna for a New Year’s Eve party of their own. On December 31 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the Radio Disney Street Team will keep kids hopping with Radio Disney music, games, contests, and a balloon drop & cider toast at noon. Noon Year’s Eve takes place at 200 Village Green Circle, Smyrna.
- Party from noon to well after midnight at the annual Peach Drop in Underground Atlanta. If you’re bringing the kids, head out early to the Budding Peach stage, located on Upper Alabama Street, for family-friendly music & activities from noon to 6:00 p.m. At 6:00 p.m., move over to the Peach Drop main stage for back-to-back concerts, featuring Collective Efforts, Heaven Davis, Soul Stash, Brantley Gilbert, and headliner Julianne Hough. The 800-pound peach drops at midnight, complete with fireworks & confetti. Or hang out in Kenny’s Alley from noon to 4:00 a.m. for DJs, bands, & eight clubs. Since they’ll be broadcasting the Chick-fil-A Bowl & Peach Drop live on the Kenny’s Alley Big Screen, you won’t miss a moment of the festivities. Underground Atlanta is located at 50 Upper Alabama Street SW, Atlanta.
- Watch brave (or crazy) Atlantans take the plunge in the 12 Annual Polar Bear Swim at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue. The swimmers will dive in at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 1. Want to jump in, too? Though it’s free to watch, there’s a $25 registration fee to participate. The Lake Lanier Olympic Venue is located at 3105 Clarks Bridge Road, Gainesville.
- Will you spend your New Year’s Eve tending bar or waiting tables? If so, celebrate on Thursday night instead at the Industry New Year Party with DJ Tubbystyle at The Peachtree Tavern. There’s no cover charge for the Industry New Year Party, which gets underway on January 1 at 9:00 p.m., & all are welcome. Peachtree Tavern is located at 3179 Peachtree Road, Atlanta.
Happy New Year!

Jennifer, I love reading about the New Year’s activities from my home town. Wish I could be at the Chick-fil-A Bowl cheering on Georgia Tech. Go Jackets!
